  • Description

Hundreds of civilians rushed to the recruiting centre in Leopoldville Mar 2 in response to General Mobutu's drive to add a new battalion to his army - already some 15000 strong.

This news of the strengthening of Mobutu's army followed the recent drive towards Leopoldville by troops of Mr Gizenga, the Lumumbist leader in Stanleyville. These troops were reported Mar 1 to be withdrawing from Luluabourg which they had occupied the week before.

Forty-four Congolese civilians were killed in Luluabourg Mar 2 when local Army units took revenge for the murder of three of their own men by townspeople. The United Nations said that after Lumumbist troops had withdrawn these "very serious disturbances began".
