Background: The bodies of the 11
Israeli athletes and officials killed after being taken hostage by armed Arab
guerrillas at the Olympic Village left Munich on Thursday (7 September),
accompanied by the remainder of Israel's Olympic contingent.

One coffin was flown to the United States, and the other ten home to Tel Aviv,
where President Zalman Shazar and the Israeli cabinet led a stats funeral
    ceremony at Lydda Airport.

Earlier Israeli Premier Gelda Meir had convened her cabinet in extraordinary
session for nearly four hours to discuss the Olympic killings, and then called
on world governments to take more effective action against Arab guerrilla cells
    in their midst.

As West German authorities prepared to bring the three surviving Palestinian
guerrillas -- all young men in their early 20s - before a Munich Magistrate, the
local police are facing a storm of criticism from within and outside West
Germany for the way they handled the incident.

There have been massed demonstrations by Jews and Jewish sympathisers all round
the world in protest at the killings in Munich. In Paris on Wednesday (6
September) thousands of chanting, tearful Jews paraded through the streets of
the city. French Foreign Minister Maurice Schumann described the guerrilla
attack as 'an atrocious and infantile crime', and said he hoped the massacre
    would net lead to reprisals.

In Jerusalem on the same day nearly 4,000 schoolchildren and students gathered
in Independence Park to protest at the killings, and the decision to continue
    with the games.

The on Wednesday night in Munich itself, thousands of people congregated in the
centre of town to demonstrate their abhorrence at the Arab violence, describing
the commandos as "dreadful murderers". The event was mainly peaceful, although
some of the crowd turned on young communists protesting about the way the police
had behaved, tearing down their banners and chasing them away.
