  • Description

Britain's rock and roll exponent, Tommy Steele, was dubbed 'Sir' Tommy Steele when he appeared in Sea Port, Capetown, during his South African tour. It is not to be taken too seriously, however, for the honour was conferred only by the Rag Queen of Capetown's University. The citation contained a reference to Steele's services to the teenagers of the world'. The ceremony came at the end of Steele's show when 'Queen' Sue Herd, an 18 year old Canadian, 'knighted' the rock and roll performer in the approved manner. Not everyone in South Africa shares this University's admiration for Mr. Steele. The Mayor of Capetown, Col. J. W. Billingham cancelled a reception to Tommy Steele because he had received so many letters protesting that rock and roll was 'undesirable'. Furthermore, students of Pretoria University have threatened to run Steele out of town when he arrives there.
