Background: A left-wing guerrilla was killed by his own bombs on Tuesday ( September 29 ) in an attack on a bowling alley and restaurant in Montevideo, Uruguay. Thee work-people were injured in the attack and three other guerrillas escaped.

The raid was made by members of the Tupamaros guerrillas organisation, which murdered a United States aid official, Mr. Daniel Mitrione, on August 9 after the Uruguayan Government refused to free political prisoners.

On Tuesday four of the guerrillas broke into a Carrasco Bowling Club and help up the owner, a cleaning woman and a baker. They then planted two bombs.

One of the guerrillas threw a Molotov cocktail at the explosives. The blast was heavier than expected and flying fragments killed the guerrilla and wounded the hold-up victims. The three other guerrillas escaped in the confusion. The explosion caused a fire which smouldered for a considerable time.

The Tupamaros are still holding two foreigners as hostages. They are Mr. Claude Fly, a 65-year-old American agricultural expert who is suffering from a respiratory ailment, and a Brazilian diplomat, Senhor Aloysio Dias Gomide, who was abducted with Mr. Mitrione.

In recent weeks the Tupamaros have made a series of bomb attacks on factories and homes in the Montevideo area. The authorities have mounted stringent security measures against them.
