After several unsuccessful attempts to form a new government by various party leaders in India, President Sanjiva Reddy dissolved parliament and called a new election. The three hundred and sixty million eligible voters will go to the polls in November or December, the earliest date possible, considering the monsoon season and the elaborate preparations necessary for such a poll. Leader of the Janata Party, Mr. Chandra Shekhar has denounced President Reddy's decision labelling it undemocratic and has called for his impeachment.
SYNOPSIS: The Janata party, which served only half its mandate before the resignation of its leader, former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, more than a month ago opened its election campaign on Thursday 24 August with a huge rally in New Delhi.
Over three hundred thousand turned ut at short notice to support their party and help fill its election fund. It was also a protest against the President's decision not to ask Janata leader Jagjivan Ram to form the next government, instead of leaving Premier Charan Singh to hold the reins until the election.
Observers believe the snap election could be Mrs. Indira Gandhi's chance to return to power. The Janata Party has been riddled with defections with only a short time to mend the broken ranks.
Mr. Ram called Mr. Singh an 'illegitimate Prime Minister'.
Former Railway Minister and Socialist Party leader Madhu Dandavate added his support for the call for impeachment, and the immediate dismissal of Mr. Singh and his government.
A protest strike called for the following day in Delhi was only partially obeyed. Former Premier Desai arrived to hear Janata Party President Chandra Shekhar who had called President reddy a murderer of democracy and a 'Lilliputian Fuehrer'.
Mr. Shekhar has called on President Reddy to appoint an all-party delegation, headed by a respected person, to represent India at next month's Non-Aligned Nations summit in Havana, Cuba.
