  • Description

The Indonesian Government is considering reducing the country's nine political parties to three -- and at the same time banning ALL political activity in rural areas except during election campaigns. A number of the nine parties failed to get any significant number of seats in Indonesia's July general elections, in which the Government-backed Sekber Golkar party gained a large majority. To illustrate the story, VISNEWS filmed some party political activity in and around Djakarta.

SYNOPSIS: The Indonesian Government is considering reducing the county's nine political parties to three. In addition, President Suharto and the Ministry of home Affairs are also considering banning ALL political activity in rural areas except during election campaigns. This ban would apply to all remaining parties -- including the Government-backed party which gained a large majority of parliamentary seats in the July general elections.

The ban was intended to speed up development and maintain peace in the rural areas, said Government sources. As for the number of political parties, it was felt that this hindered rather than helped peaceful elections. The three main parties, however, have declared their opposition to such moves. They are the Moslem, Islamic and Nationalist parties, the only ones to gain sufficient seats to survive the general election after the Government party's victory.
