  • Description

TROOPER TON McCLEAN, A MEMBER OF BRITAIN'S SPECIAL AIR SERVICE UNIT, TODAY (SUNDAY) LANDED ON THE WEST COAST OF IRELAND AFTER ROWING 72 DAYS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC SINGLE-HANDED FROM NEWFOUNDLAND, IN A 20-FOOT (6-METRE) BOAT NAMED "SUPER SILVER".

THE 26-YEAR-OLD SOLDIER, WHO ONCE SERVED IN THE SAME UNIT AS CAPTAIN JOHN RIDGEWAY AND SERGEANT CHAY BLYTHE (WHO TOOK 91 DAYS TO ROW THE ATLANTIC FROM CAPE COD TO IRELAND THREE YEARS AGO), ???ID THAT THEIR FEAT HAD INSPIRED HIM TO MAKE HIS SOLO ATTEMPT.

TROOPER McCLEAN HAD NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN ROWING BUT CLAIMED THAT HE HAD SUFFERED NEITHER SEA-SICKNESS NOR BLISTERS, ONLY SALT SORES, DURING THE TRIP. ALTHOUGH IT IS REPORTED THAT HE KNEW LITTLE OF NAVIGATION, HE CROSSED THE ATLANTIC IN EIGHT DAY LESS THEN EXPECTED. HE EXPLAINED THAT "I HAD STORMY WEATHER ALL THE WAY BUT THE WINDS WERE BEHIND ME, BLOWING ME TOWARDS IRELAND."
McCLEAN, DUBLIN-BORN AND ORPHANED AT THE AGE OF THREE, ENDED HIS CROSSING JUST NINE DAYS AFTER ANOTHER BRITISH LONE OARSMAN, JOHN FAIRFAX, ARRIVED IN FLORIDA, HAVING SET OUT FROM THE CANARY ISLANDS. BUT McCLEAN DID IT IN LESS THAN HALF THE TIME.
