Background: THE LAST BODIES OF 61 MINERS KILLED BY AN EXPLOSION IN A NORTH JAPAN COAL MINE WERE BROUGHT UP YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) FROM A GAS FILLED CHAMBER 1,700)FEET (5,180 METRES) BELOW GROUND. SEVENTEEN OTHER MINERS ARE IN A CRITICAL CONDITION IN HOSPITAL.

SEVENTY OF THE 172 MINERS WORKING IN A NEWLY-OPENED SHAFT OF THE YUBARI PIT OF THE HOKKAIDO COLLIERY WERE TRAPPED WHEN AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED ON MONDAY NIGHT. THE OTHER MINERS HANGED TO SCRAMBLE TO SAFETY BY A MILE-LONG (1,575 METRES) SHAFT TO THE PITHEAD. EIGHTEEN WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL, AND ONE HAS ALREADY DIED FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.

RESCUE TEAMS HAD TO HACK THEIR WAY THROUGH MORE THAN 100 YARDS OF ROCK TO REACH THE MEN ENTOMBED IN THE DARK AND AIRLESS CHAMBERS.

A THOUSAND PEOPLE, INCLUDING THE MINER'S RELATIONS, KEPT VIGIL IN CONTINUOUSLY FALLING SNOW.
