  • Description

France was hit by strikes in many vital sectors today (5 November) -- including postal, rail and power services -- as the unions mounted their first major challenge to the five-month-old government of President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

The postal service has already been at a standstill for three weeks. Today, postal workers in Paris and other areas were joined in their strike action by workers in a whole variety of industries.

A partial stoppage by railwaymen disrupted services into paris from western France. More action in other regions is planned. Power supplies were reduced by the strikes of electricity and ga workers. Many shops closed for the day.

The government had denounced spreading strike movement as politically motivated. But union leaders insist it is the inevitable response to the government's austerity programme, which has brought an economic slowdown. Strickers in various sectors are pressing for higher wages for guarantees against loss of jobs.
