  • Description

Queen Elizabeth the queen Mother was filmed by Visnews June 23 at the Cammell Laird shipyard, Birkenhead, launching the GBP10 million 138,000-ton liner "Windsor Castle" - biggest liner built in Britain since the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1938.

Dressed in turquoise blue, the queen Mother was greeted by thunderous applause from a crowd 50,000-strong. Most of the 1,750 boilermakers, whose dispute over "chalk-line marking" in terfered with building the ship for the past two months, watched the ceremony. Thousands of schoolchildren were there to see the Royal visitor smash the bottle against the liner's bows - step back and wipe the champagne from her face and clothes as the liner slid into the River Mersey.

The Union-Castle liner, built for the South African mail-run, will carry 250 first-class and 600 tourist-class passengers. All passenger and crew cabins are air-conditioned, and every modern facility - including a cinema, garage, swimming pool and lido for each class - is to be installed. Biggest liner ever built on Mersey-side, she replaces the ship of the same name sunk by enemy bombs in 1942.

Her maiden voyage, scheduled for August 18 next year, will be to Cape Town. She capable of getting there in 11 2/1 days - but will run a 13 2/1-day schedule until faster ships come into service.

The strike at the Cammell Laird yard is due to end June 24 - when workers voted to return, although the dispute over who should chalk-mark steel plates for cutting remains unsettled.
