BEFORE THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT IMPOSED AN UNPRECEDENTED DUSK TO DAWN CURFEW YESTERDAY, THOUSANDS OF CHANTING CHINESE WAVING COPIES OF THE WORKS OF CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG CLASHED WITH RIOT POLICE IN THE CENTRE OF THE COLONY.

HONG KONG POLICE PATROLS NOW HAVE ORDERS TO DISPERSE ANY GATHERING OF A DISORDERLY NATURE AND ANYONE IN HONG KONG TAKING PART IN A PROCESSION OR PARADE WITHOUT WRITTEN CONSENT FROM THE AUTHORITIES IS LIABLE TO IMMEDIATE ARREST.

LAST NIGHT'S CURFEW, ENDED AT DAWN TODAY WITHOUT INCIDENT, AND AN UNEASY HANGS OVER THE COLONY.

BUT YESTERDAY, THOUSANDS OF HONG KONG CHINESE ASSEMBLED NEAR THE HILTON HOTEL, CHANTING ANTI-BRITISH SLOGANS AND WAVING THE WORKS OF CHAIRMAN MAO. THEY WERE MET BY RIOT POLICE, BARRING THE WAY TO NEARBY GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

SHOPS, OFFICES AND BANKS IN THE AREA PUT DUP TYPHOON SHUTTERS WHILE THE DEMONSTRATIONS WENT ON. POLICE AND DEMONSTRATORS CLASHED AND POLICE TEAR GAS AT ONE STAGE AND MORE THAN FIFTY PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED. TAXI DRIVERS AND TRAM CREWS STAGED A LIGHTNING STRIKE DURING THE DEMONSTRATIONS AND LEFT TAXIS AND TRAMS STANDING IN THE STREETS.

THE CHINESE SAY THEY ARE DEMONSTRATING OVER ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY WHEN BREAKING UP AN INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE LAST WEEK.

TODAY, AFTER THE COLONY'S FIRST-EVER CURFEW, SHOPS AND OFFICES OPENED NORMALLY, BUT TRUCKLOADS OF RIOT POLICE ARE STILL PATROLLING THE STREETS.
