  • Description

Uganda is presently in the midst of six days of celebrations to mark the first anniversary of the Army coup, which toppled ex-President Milton Obote in January of last year.

The main events will begin on Monday (24 January), when President Idi Amin will commission a new runway at Entebbe International Airport, at the start of a three day public holiday. On Tuesday there will be a massive parade of troops and civilians along Kampala's main street, and General Amin will deliver a speech to the nation.

The January coup, led by then Major-General Idi Amin, resulted in a crisis with the Organisation of African Unity, border conflicts with Tanzania, and an attempt by President Amin to establish a firm base for eventual general elections and civil rule. General Amin remains a strong force in the army, despite troubles in July, reported to have been instigated by elements within the Ugandan Army. As Head of State, General appears firmly in control, with a Cabinet of civil servants and soldiers.

He has said that before civil rule, the country must be set right again. The mineral wealth of Uganda is yet to be exploited. Agriculture needs to be stimulated and industry must be developed. Aid for such projects has come most notably from Britain, while Israel has offered help for the military. The third five-year development plan is completed and awaits study, but all of this takes time as part of setting the country right again.

General Amin has said that civil rule could come within five years, but the estimate is subject to re-evaluation. This VISNEWS library compilation shows General Amin in his first year of power.
