Background: AS President Nixon neared the beginning of his visit to the People's Republic of China, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek in Taipei spoke to his National Assembly on Sunday (20 Feb) about recovering "our devastated territory."
The 84-year-old General led the defeated Nationalist Chinese from the mainland to Taiwan in 1949.

In his speech he did not mention President Nixon's visit to Peking -- but warned that any appeasing action by foreign nations to seek a balance of power with Peking could not serve the cause of world peace.

Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek also suggested to the assembly that they should choose a new person of "vigour and ability" to succeed him -- but he added he was willing to serve another term as President if it was required of him. Observers believe that if he desired another term, his re-election on March 20 would be a foregone conclusion.
