President Johnson, of the United States, opened up a new era in U.S. foreign relations by arranging to meet the heads of the major Western power -- Britain, France and West Germany.
The top level discussion were arranged during a series of calls made on the new American President by visiting head of state in Washington for the funeral of President Kennedy.
Among the callers at the White House was Chancellor Ludwig Erhard, of West Germany. During the brief meeting, President Johnson handed Dr. Erhard, a gold cigar box which President Kennedy had intended to present to the Chancellor.
Chancellor Erhar told President Johnson that he would return t Washington, early next year for talks.
