Background: Indian opening batsman Sunil Gavaskar hit his record-equalling 29th test cricket century in New Delhi on October 29 in the second test against the West Indies. He completed his century -- scored off 103 balls in 180 minutes -- with a boundary off West Indies fast bowler Malcolm Marshall, who had twice dismissed him cheaply in the first test. He received a standing ovation in the Feroze Katola stadium, including the congratulations of batting partner Dilip Vengsarkar. Gavaskar equalled the record set by Australian batsman Sir Donald Bradman who reached the total in 52 test matches compared to the Indian's 95. Gavaskar went on to score 121 runs including 17 fours and two sixes. He is now set to make more scoring records. With 8,017 test runs, he looks certain to pass Gary Sobers' total of 8,032 and Geoff Boycott's world record of 8,114 later in the series. He was finally bowled by Larry Gomes for 121. 114 from Vengsarkar helped the Indians to a first innings total of 464 all out. The West Indies were 319 for 6 in reply at the end of the third day's play (November 1).
