  • Description

And tonight we complete our film record of the Prime Minister's tour of the West Midlands.

First at Wellington in Shropshire where Mr. MacMillan called yesterday evening. Here he concentrated chiefly on seeing the housing conditions on a modern estate. And he visited, in particular, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lighten, who live in West Road. Their house is one of several that have been built by the Council specially for elderly couples. They gave the Prime Ministers homely welcome and, of course, tea, in their special house, for which they pay a rent of about twenty four chillings a week.

The crowd was still waiting when Mr. MacMillan came out and he met some citizens of the opposite age group.

Then on to Shrewsbury, the county town.

Here at the Ancient Guildhall there was a more formal welcome from a civic party but the crowd, led by some bolder spiritual gave three cheers for the Prime Minister. before he went into the Guildhall.

Still in Shropshire, this morning the British National Ploughing and Hedging Championships began near Cruckton.

And Mr. MacMillan turned up to watch the early stages.

He was well equipped for at wet and muddy morning and he was soon talking to the only woman competitor, Jean Burne. They discussed the difficulties ???.

Then on to the other part of the event the Hedging Championships.

And the Prime Minister was able to see much of the work at close quarters.

Again a conversation with a competitor, this time Mr. David Metcalf.

The Prime Minister and the hedger soon found something in common - a knowledge of the Knavesborough area of Yorkshire. After this chat, Mr. MacMillan moved on again and soon came to the end of his tour.

He left Shrewsbury by train for London.
