  • Description

British troops claimed hits on 10 Irish gunmen on Sunday (25 June) in fierce battles that marked the approach of Monday's midnight truce deadline. Most of the shooting was on the western edge of Belfast around two small army posts at Lonadoon and Horn Walk.

Hundreds of shots poured out towards the troops from nearby apartments, from street corners and from passing cars. The British soldiers fired back bur were unable to say whether the men they hit had been killed or wounded.

The battles were viewed as a last burst of violence by the Irish Republican Army (I.R.A.) Provisionals, before their promised truce comes into effect. The announcement of the cease fire was made on Thursday (22 June), and since then Northern Ireland has gone through one of its bloodiest three-day periods since 1969. At least six people have lost their lives.
