  • Description

Argentina's labour leaders argued with waiting newsmen at Government House in Buenos Aires on Monday (21 July) after a short meeting with President Maria Estela Peron.

Senor Casildo Herraras, Secretary-General of Argentina's powerful General Labour Confederation (C.G.T.) and Senor Lorenzo Miguel, head of the strong metal-workers union, had spent an hour with the President delivering a document suggesting possible solutions for Argentina's current political and economic crises. The union leaders later described the meeting as "very cordial".

The meeting -- which had been postponed several times because of President Peron's recent ill-health -- took place shortly after an official government announcement that the President had accepted the resignation of Economy Minister, Calestino Rodrigo. Senor Rodrigo -- a close associate of former Social Welfare Minister Jose Lopez Rega, dismissed earlier this month -- was widely regarded as the man responsible for Argentina's current difficulties. It was his decision to devalue the peso by fifty per cent that sparked off the recent wave of industrial ??? ... and provoked the political crisis.

Senor Rodrigo's resignation was swiftly followed by those of two more cabinet ministers closely associated with Senor Lopez Rega...his replacement at the Social Welfare ministry, Carlos Villone, and the Presidential Press Secretary, Jose Maria Villone. President Peron now faces the difficulties of another government reshuffle...with the preferences of the powerful labour unions in mind.

In a move interpreted by observers as easing the way for the re-organisation, Senor Lopez Rega left Argentina on Sunday (20 July) to act, according to a presential announcement, as a special envoy to unspecified official and international organisations.
