  • Description

POLICE IN ROME WERE KEPT BUSY LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) WHEN 3,000 STRIKING TEACHERS AND 2,000 LEFT-WING PROTESTORS STAGED SEPARATE DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE ITALIAN CAPITAL. THE TEACHERS, SHOUTING FOR THE RESIGNATION OF ITALY'S EDUCATION MINISTER, SIGNOR FIORENTINO SULLO, TRIED TO INVADE THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES - THE LOWER HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT. IN THE SECOND DEMONSTRATION, POLICE WERE FORCED TO STEP IN TO RESCUE A PRIEST FROM THE CROWD PROTESTING AT THE INTERVENTION OF THE SOVIET UNION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

ABOUT 100 RIOT POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO MOVE THE DEMONSTRATING TEACHERS, WHO HAD ARRIVED IN ROME FROM ALL OVER ITALY TRUNCHEONS AND TEAR-GAS WERE USED DURING THE THREE-HOUR CLASH, AND AT LEAST THREE POLICE WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL.

THE TEACHERS WERE DEMANDING MORE SECURITY AND BETTER CHANCES OF IMPROVING THEIR POSITION.

THE LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATORS, LED BY ITALIAN SOCIALIST PARTY SECRETARY SIGNOR MAURO FERRI, AND A MINISTER, SIGNOR MARIO TANASSI, MARCHED TO THE CZECHOSLOVAKIAN EMBASSY.

IT WAS HERE THAT THE CROWD THREATENED TO ENFULF A PRIEST AFTER HE HAD SHOUTED "LONG LIVE RUSSIA" AND THE OTHER PRO-SOVIET SLOGANS.

POLICE FORCED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CROWD TO REACH THE PRIEST, WHO WAS IDENTIFIED AS FATHER GIOVANNI VETTORAZZO. THE 48-YEAR-OLD BLACK-FROCKED PRIEST WAS ESCORTED TO A WAITING POLICE CAR, BUT WAS LATER RELEASED.

THE DEMONSTRATORS MOVED ON TO PROTEST AT THE IRAQI AND SPANISH EMBASSIES.
