  • Description

IN THE CAMERON HIGHLANDS IN THE WESTERN RANGE OF MOUNTAINS IN MALAYA, 130 MILES NORTH OF KUALA LUMPUR, A HUGE HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME IS UNDER PROGRESS.

STARTED IN 1959, THE CAMERON HIGHLANDS HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME WHICH IS TO ADD 25 PERCENT MORE POWER TO THE CENTRAL ELECTRICITY BOARD OF MALAYA NETWORK BY 1963, IS EXPECTED TO COST 50 MILLION U.S. DOLLARS, TOWARDS WHICH THE WORLD BANK HAS GIVEN CONSIDERABLE LOANS.

THE RESERVOIR BEHIND THE DAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION WILL EVENTUALLY HOLD 1,670 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER. FOUR TUNNELS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. THE LONGEST OF THE CALLED "TELOM TUNNEL" IS NEARLY 6 1/2 MILES LONG AND ANOTHER ONE WILL BE 4 1/2 MILES LONG. THE WATER HEAD IS 950 FT. AND POWER-STATION CAPACITY IS 105,500 KW.

NEARLY 2,500 WORKERS ARE ENGAGED ON THE PROJECT ALONG WITH MOST MODERN EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT. A HUGE BRIDGE IS ALSO BEING BUILT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESERVOIR TO REPLACE THE ROAD THAT WILL GO EVENTUALLY UNDER WATER.

MALAYA IS AHEAD OF ALL SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES IN GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF ELECTRICITY. ELECTRICITY IS IN COMMON USE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY AND POWER FAILURES ARE RARE.

UNDER THE DEVELOPMENT PLAN, THE COUNTRY IS ALSO ENCOURAGING LOCAL INDUSTRIES WHICH WILL REQUIRE MORE POWER AS YEARS GO BY.
