Background: The Soviet Union is defending its title in the second World Youth soccer Tournament being held this year in Japan. fifteen nations are competing in what is billed as the second highest level global soccer event next to the World Cup. The teams taking part qualified for the final tournament from a hundred and one countries after a series of eliminations in five regions. The players must all have been born since the first of August 1959.

SYNOPSIS: The group A teams from Mexico and Algeria were among the first to meet in the tournament. The young players showed skill and aggression from Mexico's kickoff. Mexico efficiently began to develop and attack down the right flank. But the Algerian defence had an answer.

From the early stages of the same the two teams showed they were well matched. Algeria attacking, but this time it's the Mexican defence which proves inviolable. Again, a promising movement breaks down into midfield manoeuvring.

The spectators wanted to see goals were soon to get what they came for. It starts with a corner kick to Mexico and after a desperate goal-mouth melee it falls upon Enrique Hernandez to do his duty.

The scoreboard showed Algeria's challenge. They accepted it and in the second half managed to peg back the Mexican advantage. It happened when there was some scrappy play and an element of panic in the goal mouth. Hocine Yahi exploited it for Algeria.

The deadlock remained unbroken despite all the best efforts of the young players. An opportunity for Algeria came to nothing: Brahim Sebbar failed to make the corner kick count.

But for the hopeful youngsters it was early days in the competition, which is scheduled to last through three preliminary matches and three finals over nine days until September the seventh.
