  • Description

PRESIDENT LUEBKE LED HE 10,000 PEOPLE WHO TODAY (SUNDAY) ATTENDED A CEREMONY COMMEMORATING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION OF BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP.

THE GERMAN PEOPLE, SAID THE PRESIDENT, MUST PROVE THEIR WILLINGNESS TO CLEANSE THEMSELVES OF THE PAST, OR THE COUNTRY'S REPUTATION WOULD SUFFER. ONLY BY REFUSING TO WHITEWASH THE TRUTH AND SUPPRESS MEMORIES HAD GERMANY REGAINED ITS HONOUR AND INTEGRITY.

MANY OF THE 10,000 PEOPLE AT THE BELSEN CAMP TODAY WERE FORMER INMATES WHO RETURNED TO THE PLACE WHERE 50,000 PEOPLE DIED. THEY SAW THE PRESIDENT LAY THE FIRST WREATH, FOLLOWED BY MANY OTHERS TO THE MEMORY OF THEIR LOVED ONES.

IN BERLIN, IN MANY OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE, SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONIES WERE HELD. THE BERLIN JEWISH COMMUNITY WENT TO THE GRAVES OF RELATIVES AND STOOD THERE IN SILENCE. AT RAVENSBRUCK AND SACHSENHAUSEN OTHER LARGE CROWDS GATHERED. IN PARIS, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE ATTENDED MASS AND PAID RESPECTS TO THE MARTYRS OF THE DEPORTATION.

ON APRIL 15TH 1945, HORRIFIED BRITISH TROOPS ENTERED THE TYPHOID-RIDDEN CAMP WHERE MORE THAN 13,000 BODIES LITTERED THE GROUND AND THE LIVING WERE MERELY WALKING SKELETONS. MANY OTHERS DIED SHORTLY AFTER LIBERATION.
