  • Description

There has been intense diplomatic activity in the Middle East while leaders search for a solution to the dispute between the Palestinians and the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Both Algeria and Syria have been mediating in the dispute, which hinges on Libyan disagreement with PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) chief Yasser Arafat's diplomatic efforts on behalf of his organisation.

SYNOPSIS: While efforts were being made to find a solution to the dispute, Dr Ahmed Taleb al-Ibrahimi, seated on the left, carried a message from Algerian President Chadli Benjedid to his Syrian counterpart President Hafez al-Assad. The message reportedly covered issues relating to the generation situation in the Middle East, but with particular reference to Colonel Gaddafi's dispute with the PLO.

Dr Ibrahimi is the minister acting as special adviser to President Benjedid. During his visit he also visited the official spokesman of the PLO Abu Moshen Abu Maizer, Mr George Habash, head of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and other Palestinian representatives. There was afterwards no indication that a solution had been found.
