  • Description

IT WAS TEA AND SYMPATHY FOR SEVEN HUNDRED KUALA LUMPUR RESIDENTS ON SATURDAY (21 JUNE). MALAY, CHINESE AND INDIAN RESIDENTS GOT TOGETHER AT A TEA PARTY TO TRY AND WIPE OUT THE MEMORY OF THE BITTER RACIAL STRIFE IN THE CITY LAST MONTH.

THE PARTY, HELD AT THE CITY'S SULTAN SULEIMAN CLUB, WAS ORGANISED BY GOODWILL COMMITTEES AND THE MALAYSIAN ARMY. GUESTS CAME FROM AREAS WHERE THE MOST VIOLENT CLASHES HAD OCCURRED DURING THE DISTURBANCES - WHICH COST THE LIVES OF OVER 160 PEOPLE - AND WHERE THE MOST STRINGENT CURFEW HAD BEEN ENFORCED.

BUT ON SATURDAY THE ATMOSPHERE WAS DETERMINEDLY PEACEFUL. SMILING MALAY YOUTHS SERVED FOOD TO CHINESE GIRLS. LIEUTENANT-GENERAL IBRAHIM ISMAIL, SECRETARY OF THE EMERGENCY NATIONAL OPERATIONS COUNCIL, AND LIEUTENANT-COLONEL HAMZAH ABU BAKAR, COMMANDER OF THE TROOPS IN KUALA LUMPUR DURING THE RIOTS, MINGLED AMONG THE GUESTS, CHATTING TO CHINESE RESIDENTS.

THE PARTY WAS A CONSCIOUS GESTURE TOWARDS FRIENDSHIP, BUT ALSO A SYMPTOM OF THE INCREASING PEACE IN THE AREA.
