  • Description

A surprise meeting between Premier Macmillan of Britain and Russian Premier Khrushchev, took place, Oct 4, at the British leader's New York hotel. The two leaders talked for an hour and a half but the topics they covered were not announced.

In the past few days there has been increased pressure from the neutral powers on the leaders of the East and West to renew contacts. Mr. Khrushchev has already stated that he thought relations could be improved between the Soviet Union and the United States but first the American Government would have to make a clear admission that they were responsible for "provocative and aggressive acts against the Soviet Union."
During his present stay in New York, Premier Macmillan has met President Eisenhower several times and this was his second meeting with the Russian Premier. At the end of the talks Mr. Khrushchev stated his visit was "very productive". A British official described the meeting as "amicable throughout."
It was also disclosed that Premier Khrushchev had invited Mr. Macmillan to stay at his hunting lodge in Russia.
