  • Description

Forty-six Chilean refugees -- who had lived in the Italian Embassy in Santiago since the 1973 military coup in Chile -- arrived in Italy on Tuesday (21 January). They were met at Rome airport by friends and sympathisers.

They made up the majority of refugees involved in the first stage of an evacuation of the 350 people ;who took sanctuary in the Italian Embassy during the coup. Three more had left the main party during a two-hour stop-over in Switzerland to make their way to Great Britain and France.

The evacuation is being organised by the Inter-Governmental Committee for European Migration. An official for the Committee has said that they hope to have completed the evacuation of the remaining 301 refugees from the Italian Embassy by the end of January. Another 170 refugees inside other foreign embassies in the Chilean capital will be evacuated as soon as possible after that date.

A spokesman for the refugees described their life in the Embassy as "very comfortable" despite the crowded condition.
