  • Description

The British Labour Party's annual conference opens in Blackpool, in the north of England, on Monday (2 October) with its attitude to the key question of entry into the European Economic Community still in the balance. It was almost certain to be the main topic of the Conference.

For the Party leader, Mr Harold Wilson, the issue represents a great personal test, but by the eve of conference he had overcome a major hurdle, having the National Executive agree to propose to Conference that a future Labour Government should renegotiate the terms of entry.

The National Executive decided also to oppose a strongly-worded motion calling on a Labour Government to withdrew immediately form the Common Market.
