  • Description

The First Workshop Committee for the Redevelopment na Reconstruction of the suez Canal Zone ended its meetings in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on thursday (12 December).

The Workshop lasted from 2-12 December, and included leading Egyptian and Wast German planners, architects and engineers who reviewed the reconstruction and development of the Canal Zone from every possible angle.

The delegates taking part in the Workshop have visited three major cities in the Canal Zone: Suez, Port Said and Ismalia, where they reviewed the damage caused by war and abandonment.

Important steps have already been taken in clearing and strengthening the Suez Canal itself. British, French and United States minesweepers cleared the Canal of explosives earlier in the year, and in the first week of December, the Egyptian Government signed a contract with the Japanese Penta Ocean Construction Company for the deepening and widening of the Canal to allow the passage of larger vessels.

Following the final Workshop meeting, the Egyptian Minister for Housing and Reconstruction, Mr. Osman Ahmed Osman thanked the West German Government for its assistance. He said that West Germany had been invited to attend the Workshop because of the country's experience in reconstruction and development.
