  • Description

India intends to continue its nuclear testing programme in spite of set-backs caused by withdrawal of Canadian aid.

The Canadians, who contributed more than 100 million dollars (GBP 43 million sterling) to the India nuclear programme, withdrew their support following the detonation of a nuclear device by the Indians on 18 May.

The Chairman of the country's Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Homi Sethna, said the suspension of this aid would slow the development programme initially but, it would pick up once the Indians started making what is needed themselves.

The Rumanian government has indicated its willingness to help the Indians with research and development plans.

The main Indian research centre is situated at Trombai on the coast near Bombay. More than 10,000 people work there and the complex includes four reactors, laboratories and a variety of research facilities.

SYNOPSIS: The Canadians said the test explosion violated India's agreement to develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes. They cut off all nuclear - related aid. The Indians maintain its use is peaceful and they've served notice that their programme will continue.
