  • Description

JAPAN'S PRO-AMERICAN LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY SEEM CERTAIN TO INCREASE THEIR MAJORITY IN THE 250 SEAT UPPER HOUSE OF PARLIAMENT AFTER THE WEEK-END ELECTION.

NEARLY 67 MILLION JAPANESE WERE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE FOR 126 CANDIDATES. OF THE 80 SEATS DECLARED THE LIBERALS HAVE 54 WHILE THE PRO-PEKING MAJOR OPPOSITION PARTY, THE JAPANESE SOCIALISTS, HAVE 15 WHICH IS REGARDED AS A SETBACK. BY THE TIME THE FINAL RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE THE LIBERALS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE IMPROVED ON THEIR 71 SEATS AT STAKE.

A LIBERAL PARTY OFFICIAL COMMENTING ON THE ELECTION RESULTS SAID THE VOTERS PREFERRED THE LIBERALS' SECURITY ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE UNITED STATES TO "UNARMED NEUTRALITY" AS ADVOCATED BY THE SOCIALISTS.

ONE FAVOURABLE REACTION TO THE VICTORY WAS ON THE JAPANESE STOCK EXCHANGE. IT SURGED AHEAD ON INDICATIONS OF AN INCREASED LIBERAL MAJORITY.

THE MAIN POLITICAL PARTIES ARE PLACING GREAT IMPORTANCE ON THE ELECTION WHICH COMES AT THE CRUCIAL PERIOD OF JAPAN AT HOME AND ABROAD.

AT HOME, ESPECIALLY, RISING PRICES ARE BRINGING PRESSURE FOR WAGE INCREASE - A PROCESS THAT COULD THREATEN JAPAN'S BOOMING EXPORTS.

THE RESULT IS ALSO EXPECTED TO ENHANCE THE POSITION OF THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. SATO, IN THE ELECTION OF THE PARTY PRESIDENT LATER THIS YEAR.
