Hopes for an early reconciliation between Syria and Egypt appeared impossible today (7 June) after Egypt closed the Syrian Embassy in Cairo yesterday (6 June) The staff were given only 48 hours to leave Egypt also withdrew its diplomats from Damascus.

SYNOPSIS: The Egyptian move followed the intervention of the Syrian Army in the Lebanese crisis last week. According to Reuters, reporting from Cairo, the drastic Egyptian action stemmed from profound differences between the two allies over how to end the Lebanese civil war, and solve the Middle East conflict. Relations appeared to be at their lowest ebb since a short-lived union between Syria and Egypt collapsed in 1961, leading to a break in diplomatic links.

While the diplomats were packing their bags, the Syrian Embassy spokesman, Mr. Maamoun el-Attassy said that Egypt's action was tantamount to breaking diplomatic relations with Syria. However, Egypt replied that the decision to close the Syrian Embassy followed an attack on the Egyptian Embassy in Damascus. This, in turn, was in retaliation for the occupation of the Syrian Embassy by student demonstrators last Thursday. Syria's latest action on the Lebanese crisis.
