  • Description

THREE AFRICANS, CONVICTED OF MURDER... THE CENTRAL FIGURES IN A NEW ANGLO-RHODESIAN CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS... WERE HANGED IN SALISBURY YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), IN DEFIANCE OF REPRIEVES GRANTED BY BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH. THEY WERE HANGED SHORTLY AFTER 0900, LOCAL TIME, IN SALISBURY PRISON, WHILE THEIR WIVES AND PRESSMEN STOOD OUTSIDE THE PRISON GATES.

THREE AFRICANS, VICTOR MLAMBO, JAMES DHALMINI AND DULY SHADRECK, WERE THE FIRST TO BE EXECUTED IN RHODESIA SINCE THE LEADER OF THE ILLEGAL REGIME, MR IAN SMITH, ANNOUNCED THAT THE COUNTRY WOULD BREAK AWAY FROM BRITAIN IN NOVEMBER, 1965. MORE THAN 100 AFRICANS ARE UNDER SENTENCE OF DEATH IN RHODESIA. THEIR EXECUTIONS HAVE BEEN DELAYED FOR MONTHS, THROUGH LEGAL UNCERTAINTIES, BUT MANY OF THEM NOW SEEM CERTAIN TO GO TO THE GALLOWS.

COUNSEL FOR THE THREE AFRICANS HANGED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) HAD RECENTLY PETITIONED QUEEN ELIZABETH, WHO GRANTED REPRIEVES FOR ALL THREE. HOWEVER, THE ILLEGAL REGIME REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE REPRIEVES, CLAIMING THAT BRITAIN HAD NO RIGHT TO EXERCISE THE PREROGATIVE OF MERCY.

A NOTICE, ANNOUNCING THAT THE MEN HAD BEEN HANGED, WAS PINNED TO A NOTICE BOARD OUTSIDE THE PRISON SOME FORTY MINUTES AFTER THE EXECUTIONS.

TEN HOURS LATER, A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT WAS BROADCAST TO THE COUNTRY ON RADIO AND TELEVISION, DURING THE PEAK VIEWING PERIOD. IN IT, THE ILLEGAL REGIME ACCUSED BRITAIN OF USING THE THREE AFRICANS AS PAWNS IN A POLITICAL GAME, TO UNDERMINE AUTHORITY OF THE REGIME AND DISCREDIT THE HIGH COURT OF RHODESIA.
