  • Description

MORE THAN A THOUSAND MEMBERS OF TANU - THE TANGANYIKAN AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION - AND THE COUNTRY'S RULING PARTY, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MARCHED TO THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES ASSISTANCE TO THE TSHOMBE REGIME IN THE CONGO.

FOR TWO HOURS THE CROWD SHOUTED "YANKEE GO HOME" AND "DOWN WITH TSHOMBE" AS THEY MARCHED FROM THE PARTY'S HEADQUARTERS IN LUMUMBA STREET TO THE EMBASSY. AMONG MANY SENIOR MEMBERS OF TANU TAKING PART WAS THE MAYOR OF DAR-ES-SALAAM. POLICE KEPT A WATCHFUL EYE ON PROCEEDINGS BUT THERE WERE NO VIOLENT INCIDENTS.

THE PARTY'S DEPUTY SECRETARY GENERAL AND PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY IN THE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE, MR. NZUNDA HEADED A SEVEN MAN DELEGATION WHO HANDED THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR A MEMORANDUM PROTESTING AGAINST AMERICAN AID TO M. TSHOMBE. THE AMBASSADOR PROMISED TO SEND IT TO PRESIDENT JOHNSON.

WHEN HE LEFT THE MEETING, WHICH HAD LASTED FOR HALF-AN-HOUR, MR. NZUNDA SAID "TANU DOESN'T WANT TO SEE ANOTHER VIETNAM IN THE CONGO, AND IT WOULDN'T BE A RESPONSIBLE ORGANISATION IF IT JUST KEPT QUIET."
