Background: BETWEEN FIFTY AND SEVENTY THOUSAND PEOPLE SAW THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH OFFICIALLY OPEN THE "CARNIVAL OF THE SWAN", THE BIGGEST WATER SPECTACLE EVER HELD IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA ON DECEMBER 2, 1962.

THE DUKE, IN A PRIVATELY-OWNED LAUNCH, TOURED THE LONG LINES OF BOATS GATHERED IN REVIEW AND CAME CLOSE TO THE RIVER BANKS TO WAVE TO PEOPLE ON SHORE. DURING THE REVIEW, A FORMATION OF VAMPIRE JETS SWEPT LOW ACROSS THE RIVER IN SALUTE.

THE HUGE CROWD WATCHED THE CARNIVAL FROM A MILE LONG STRETCH OF RIVERBANK, FROM VANTAGE POINTS THROUGHOUT KINGS PARK AND FROM HUNDREDS OF SMALL BOATS AND YACHTS IN CRAWLEY BAY. THE CROWD INCLUDED MANY VISITORS TO THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES.

THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ACTED AS OFFICIAL STARTER FOR A RACE BETWEEN HUNDREDS OF SMALL CRAFT FROM CRAWLEY BAY TO FRECKWATER BAY.
