Background: In Rome, May 26 - Ascension Day - Pope John XXIII decreed the sanctification of Gregorio Barbarigo, a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Bergamo and Padua, who lived in the 17th century.

Followed by a procession of his dignitaries of the roman Catholic church, Pope John entered the Basilica of St. John in the Lateran, where he conducted a Pontifical Mass. During the ceremony the decree of sanctification was read in Latin.

Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo died in 1697, after a life of devotion, dedicated to the welfare of his brethren in the faith. He was greatly revered by all and regarded as a saint by many, especially among Catholics in Venice, Bergamo and Padua.

St. Gregorio was accorded 'equivalent' canonization under which the Vatican's Congregation of Rites need not approve definite miracles said to have been worked through his intercession.
