  • Description

After talks with British Prime Minister James Callaghan at No, 10 Downing Street, Foreign Secretary Dr. David Owen took the Israeli Premier across to the Foreign Office to see the room where the Balfour declaration was signed in 1917. On Saturday (3 December) 500 demonstrators, including many palestinian students, marched through central London in protest at Mr. Begin's visit.

SYNOPSIS: At his talks and working lunch, Mr. Begin had urged the European Economic Community to back the peace moves following President Anwar Sadat's visit to Jerusalem. Half way through the Jerusalem. Half way through the discussion, according to sources, Mr. Begin surprised the British by pulling out a set of maps and delivering as illustrated lecture on the problems of Israel's security. In particular Mr. Begin had dwelt on the dangers which Israel saw in a return to pre-1967 borders.

At the Foreign Office Mr. Begin was shown the room, known as the Balfour Room, where in 1917 the then Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour signed the famous declaration which led to the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The room, overlooking St. James's Park, is still used as the private office of the Foreign Secretary.

Strict security has been in force to prevent a repetition of demonstrations and threats which occurred when Mr. Begin, as an opposition leader, visited Britain five years ago. This march on Saturday (3 December) of about 500 demonstrators, including many Palestinian students was flanked by police, but there were no incidents as they marched from Hyde Park and through Grosvenor Square. Along their route they handed in a letter of protest to the Egyptian Embassy. A statement issued by the General Union of Palestinian Students described Mr. Begin as 'This terrorist whose crimes against the Palestinians played a major part in their forcible expulsion, verging on genocide, in 1948, from their ancestral home of Palestine."
