SYNOPSIS: Petroleum fuels the ships and aircraft of the U.S. Navy and the machines of industry but rising prices and dwindling oil supplies have prompted the Navy and industry to try alternate fuel sources. One source being tested at Anvil Points, Colorado, is oil shale, which contains "kerogen" -- a rock oil that can be refined into synthetic fuels.
An Anvil Points, oil shale mines are not stripmined, but partially scooped out, forming caves. This way the shale mountains are left almost intact.
Mined shale is super heated, and the crude oil drawn off. The oil is then stored to await refining.
The Anvil Points site in Colorado is only a small part of the vast oil shale reserve in Colorado.
