  • Description

Visnews filmed Feb 17 President de Gaulle touring the area of the great gas deposits at Lacq, visiting the town of Pan and watching a paratroopers' exercise there, on the fourth and last day of his tour of south-western France.

At Lacq the head of the Societe Nationale de Petroles D'Aquitaine explained to General de Gaulle and his party that the end of 1960 should see the finish of the development programme aimed at producing 20 million cubic meters of gas daily. From then onwards the Lacq plant will be able to extract annually 400 million cubic meters of purified gas - the equivalent of six million tons of coal and four millions of fuel oil - in other words 4% of France's consumption of power or 10% of her deficit in power. Lacq is further capable of providing 1.4 million tons of sulphur a year. Thus France, until recently an importer of sulphur, will become a considerable exporter.

At Pau de Gaulle paid his tribute at the memorial of the Unknown Soldier and attended a reception at town hall. greeted by a milling crowd with shouts such as "Algerie Francaise!", "Bourguiba an poteau!" (Bourguiba to then stake) and "Vive de Gaulle!" the General delivered a speech. "What a splendid assembly", de Gaulle exclaimed, "This gives me comfort and makes me realize that I belong to everyone. I want to thank Pau and Bearn." He added: "With the Algerians of all communities, with the African community recently created, with our friends in the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean we are a great nation which does not need to lower its head to anyone".

After visiting the castle where Henry IV of France was born General de Gaulle watched a parachute exercise. Three Nord-2500 transport planes dropped 90 paratroopers and equipment including a jeep and a field-gun. Some of the men landed near the General's vantage point.

In the evening the President returned to Paris after a tour which was considered a personal triumph.
