    HERE IN ROME, THOSE WHO OWNED CARS BROUGHT THEM ON TO THE ROADS, ADDING TO THE RUSH HOUR CHAOS AS ARMY LORRIES WERE PRESSED INTO SERVICE AS THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP OUT WITH THE SITUATION.

    THE STRIKE WAS CALLED IN PROTEST AGAINST THE DELAY IN DRAWING UP NEW CONTRACTS.THE TRANSPORT MEN ARE ALSO DEMANDING A FORTY-PER-CENT WAGE RISE AS OPPOSED TO THE FIVE-PER-CENT INCREASE ON OFFERED BY MUNICIPAL TRANSPORT COMPANIES.

    THE STRIKE WAS NOT THE ONLY TROUBLE ON ITALY'S LABOUR FRONT TODAY.MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNIST-SOCIALIST BUILDING WORKERS UNION WERE OUT FOR THE 24-HOURS IN PROTEST OVER THE ARREST ON 33 WORKERS DETAINED DURING A RIOT LAST MONTH; AND BANK WORKERS ANNOUNCED ANOTHER 24-HOUR STOPPAGE TO BEGIN AT MIDNIGHT TOMORROW, (THURSDAY).
