  • Description

The Sixth Annual Friendship Games between Ghana and the Ivory Coast ended last Saturday (April 22) in Accra with the Ivory Coast taking home three of the five trophies contested.

The visitors won the basketball, volleyball and football cups, but Ghana retained the boxing and athletics trophies.

The score in the athletics competition, the final contest of the five-day event, was 163-154. Ghana's retention of the athletics trophy was mainly the work of its women's team which chalked up 79 points against the Ivory Coast's 49. In the men's division, the Ivory Coast showed their superiority, scoring 105 points to Ghana's 85.

Last year, it was ghana that walked away with three of the five trophies. Their loss of the soccer trophy was the change that determined this year's Ivory Coast victory.

SYNOPSIS: Although the Ivory Coast was the overall winner in the Sixth Annual Friendship Games, which ended in Accra last Saturday, Ghana retained its hold on the boxing and athletics trophies.

And in the athletics competition, it was Ghana's strong women's team that made the difference. Here, Ghana's Hannan Afriyie wins the 100 metra event. She won with a time of 12.2 seconds.

In all, the Ghanaian women's team won 79 points to the Ivory Coast's 49.

In the men's events, the Ivory Coast proved superior. Gassou Kone's 10.7-second run over the 100 metra course was too much for Ghana's Ohene Karikari. The Ivory Coast's men's team scored 105 points to Ghana's 85.

But it was Ghana's overall performance that won them the athletics trophy again this year. Their final tally was 163 points to the Ivory Coast's 154. The only record set in this part of the games was the triple jump by ghanaian policeman J.O.Amoah. He leaped 53 feet one-and-three-quarter inches.

Ghana's Karikari, who failed in the 100-metra dash, did better in the 110 metra hurdles, winning it with a time of 14.6 seconds.

Ghana's success in athletics, however, could not compensate for their loss in the volleyball, basketball and soccer games. Those trophies went home with the Ivory Coast teams, this year's winners.
