  • Description

TEL AVIV'S LYDDA AIRPORT WAS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THE SCENE OF EMOTIONAL REUNIONS WHEN THE LAST TWO ISRAELIS HIJACKED ON A TWA AIRLINER IN AUGUST WERE ALLOWED TO RETURN HOME FROM DAMASCUS AFTER BEING HELD 98 DAYS BY SYRIAN AUTHORITIES. AMONG THOSE AT THE AIRPORT TO GREET PROFESSOR SHLONO SAMUELOFF AND MR. SALAH MOUALEM, WERE PRIME MINISTER GOLDA MEIR AND FOREIGN MINISTER ABBA EBAN.

THE TWO MEN WERE RELEASED AS PART OF A PRISONER EXCHANGE DEAL - AS SOON AS THE INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS WAS ABLE TO ADVISE THE ISRAELI AUTHORITIES THAT THEY HAD REACHED ATHENS ON THEIR WAY TO TEL AVIV, THE ISRAELIS RELEASED 13 SYRIANS, INCLUDING TWO AIRLINE PILOTS.

FORTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD PROFESSOR SAMUELOFF IS A TEACHER OF PHYSIOLOGY AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY IN JERUSALEM, AND MR. MOUALEM, 43, IS A TRAVEL AGENT.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE AIRPORT, PROFESSOR SAMUELOFF SAID HE HAD NOT BEEN MALTREATED - BUT MR. MOUALEM WHO HAD BEEN HELPED OUT OF THE AIRCRAFT AND HAD CONSTANTLY LEANT ON THE PROFESSOR'S ARM, REFUSED TO COMMENT ON WHETHER HE HAD BEEN HIT OR NOT.

PROFESSOR SAMUELOFF TOLD REPORTERS THAT HIS IMPRISONMENT HAD BROUGHT HIM FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE "HATE OF ISRAEL WHICH OUR NORTHERN NEIGHBOURS HOLD AGAINST US". MR. MOUALEM SAID: "WE WERE KEPT LIKE TWO VERY VALUABLE BIRDS IN A CAGE, PERMITTED TO WALK SEVEN METRES (YARDS) BY TWO AND A HALF METRES (8 FEET), AN WE HAD FIVE TO SIX TIMES LESS SPACE COMPARATIVELY THAN A BIRD IN ITS CAGE".
