  • Description

IN SOUTH VIETNAM, FORCES SUPPORTING THE GOVERNMENT HAVE BEEN OBSERVING A 24-HOUR TRUCE TO CELEBRATE THE TET (LUNAR NEW YEAR) HOLIDAY.

HOWEVER, SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS HAVE REMAINED AT THEIR POSTS DURING THE HOLIDAY TO PREVENT A REPETITION OF THE VIET CONG'S 1968 TET OFFENSIVE, WHICH CAUGHT MANY UNITS UNDER STRENGTH WHILE THE SOLDIERS WERE CELEBRATING AT HOME WITH THEIR FAMILIES.

ALTHOUGH SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT TROOPS WERE ON A 'RED ALERT' DURING THE TET HOLIDAY, THEY MANAGED TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION AT THEIR POSTS. AS THE YEAR OF THE COCK ENDED AND VIETNAMESE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE USHERED IN THE NEW YEAR OF THE DOG, SOLDIERS IN BIENHOA AND GIA DINH PROVINCES ERECTED SIGNS WELCOMING THE NEW YEAR, WHILE OTHERS MADE AN OFFERING OF A COOKED CHICKEN.

THE 24-HOUR TRUCE ENDED TODAY (FEBRUARY 6TH).
