    THE NEWLY-ELECTED LEADER OF THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF LIBERAL, IN KOMLA AGBELI GBEDEMAH, LAUNCHED HIS PARTY ON SATURDAY (31 MAY) WITH PLEDGE TO SALVAGE GHANA'S ECONOMY FROM ITS SLUMP. IN THE SPEECH BEFORE A HUGE CROWD IN ACCRA'S NATIONAL SPORTS STADIUM, THE FORMER FINANCE MINISTER IN OUSTED PRESIDENT KWAME NKRUMAH'S GOVERNMENT, STRONGLY CRITICISED THE ECONOMIC POLICIES OF THE RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ALLIANCE ALSO SPOKE TO THE AUDIENCE, COMPRISED OF ALLIANCE REPRESENTATIVES FROM ALL OVER GHANA.

    MR GBEDEMAH SAID THAT THE ECONOMIC SITUATION OF THE COUNTRY WAS SO BAD THAT "THREE YEARS OF DELIBERATE STAGNATION HAS NOT HELPED MUCH."
    AS A FIRST STEP TOWARDS SOLVING GHANA'S ECONOMIC ILLS, HE SAID, HIS PARTY WHEN VOTED TO POWER, WOULD MOUNT "A GREAT CRUSADE OF NATIONAL RECOVERY " WITH THE EMPHASIS ON EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT.

    MR GBEDEMAH ALSO PLEDGED TO INTRODUCE LIBERAL DEMOCRACY IN THE COUNTRY AND THAT THE PARTY WOULD RESTORE GHANA'S IMAGE IN THE HIGHEST COUNCILS OF THE WORLD AND AMONG ALL PEOPLES.

    IT WOULD ALSO SUPPORT AFRICAN STATES IN REMOVING REMNANTS OF COLONIALISM, APARTHEID AND RACIST REGIMES FROM THE CONTINENT.

    MR GBEDEMAH'S PARTY AND THE PROGRESS PARTY OF DR. KOFI BUSIA, LAUNCHED EARLIER LAST MONTH, ARE GENERALLY REGARDED AS FRONT RUNNERS IN THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

    THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL HAS PROMISED TO RETURN THE COUNTRY TO CIVILIAN RULE BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER.
