  • Description

On the eve of the President Nixon's arrival tonight (27 Sept) for a three-day visit to Italy, thousands of Communists and Socialists took part in authorised protest marches in cities throughout the country, including Milan.

As the American President arrived tonight (Sunday) at Ciampino Military Airport near Rome, left-wing demonstrators rampaged through the streets of the Italian capital. Hundreds of youths shouting "Nixon Hangman" clashed repeatedly with police as they charged through the streets breaking the windows banks and shops.

The airport was heavily guarded as the President, accompanied by Mrs Nixon and Secretary of State Williams Rogers, walked across the tarmac to shake hands with waiting Italian officials.

President Nixon was received at the Quirinale palace by President Guiseppe Saragat. He will also be having talks with Italian Prime Minister Emilio Colombo and meeting Pope Paul before flying to the U.S. aircraft carrier "Saratoga" in the Mediterranean.
