  • Description

ON APRIL 20TH, A GROUP OF SOME TWO HUNDRED MARAUDERS - SAID TO BE CAMBODIAN ARMY MET - CROSSED THE BORDER INTO SOUTH VIETNAM AND RANSACKED THE VILLAGE OF VINH GIA, IN AN GIANG PROVINCE. FIFTY-TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 22 WOUNDED.

FOUR DAYS LATER, APRIL 24, THE FIRST CAMERAMAN REACHED THE SCENE TO FIND THE REMAINING VILLAGERS STILL STUNNED BY THE ATTACK. THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, MR. LUONG, ARRIVED TO INVESTIGATE THE INCIDENT ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT, BUT IT SEEMED EXTREMELY UNLIKELY THAT THE ATTACK HAD BEEN MADE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT.

VILLAGERS WEPT AS THEY TOLD HOW THEIR RELATIVES HAD BEEN KILLED, THEIR HOUSES LOOTED AND THEN BURNED TO THE GROUND. ONE MAN POINTED OUT THE SPOT WHERE HIS WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN HAD BEEN BURNED TO DEATH IN THE ATTACK.

A PROTEST NOTE TO THE CAMBODIAN GOVERNMENT DESCRIBED THE RAID AS A BARBAROUS ACT AND DEMANDED COMPENSATION AND PUNISHMENT OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE.
