  • Description

Pope Paul met 2,000 gypsies from throughout western Europe in a special audience at his summer residence of Castelgandolfo, near Rome, on Thursday (28 August), and the audience was seen as a move to reconcile warring gypsy tribes bring gypsies closer to society.

The audience was officially intended to return the visit the Pope made to a gypsy gathering ten years ago.

The Pope compared the gypsies with Jesus Christ and his disciples, who, like them, had been wanderers. He told the wildly cheering crowd: "in you is mirrored an aspect of the life of Christ."
After the speech, the Pope mingled with the colourfully clad gathering and watched as the gypsies sang and danced traditional numbers accompanied by violins and guitars.

SYNOPSIS: Castelgandolfo near Rome -- the summer palace of Pope Paul, where he met two-thousand gypsies from all over western Europe in what was seen as a move to reconcile warring gypsy tribes and further understanding between gypsies and society.

The audience was officially intended to return the visit the Pope made to a gypsy gathering ten years ago. Before the meeting outside the Holy City, the gypsies visited St. Peters Basilica for a special service accompanies ??? violinists and guitarists.

The Pope compared the gypsies with Jesus Christ and his disciples who, like them, had been wanderers. He told them: "In you is mirrored an aspect of the life of Christ."
The gypsies were invited to Rome by the Pope as a special celebration during the Roman Catholic Church's Holy Year. This year the theme is renewal and reconciliation.

During their stay, the gypsies have been occupying a special camp site outside Rome, provided by the Vatican.

In many cases the gypsies had travelled ??? -- even thousands -- of miles for the meeting with the Pope.

The gypsies have a long tradition of rivalry and fierce tribal loyalty, but there were no signs of animosity as the Pope mingled with his audience.
