  • Description

More than twenty drivers from top racing stables started in the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday (22 April) in a race which was notable for breakdowns.

Hot favourites for the title wore Graeme Lawrence of New Zealand, Hongkong's John MacDonald and Max Stewart of Australia. But it was Australian Vern Schuppan, driving a March 722 who went on to take the checquered flag at an average speed of 91.60 miles per hour.

He finished just over half a minute ahead of Lawrence, and had already lapped third-place getter John MacDonald.

The blond 30-year-old Schuppan, a rising star on the European circuit, flew out to Singapore after competing at Dijon in France over the weekend. Immediately after the race, he was due to return to Europe to compete in Wednesday's annual event at Monza in Italy.
