A woodcarving depicting Christ on the cross has been displayed in Beirut. The crucifix, already?

  • Description

A woodcarving depicting Christ on the cross has been displayed in Beirut. The crucifix, already examined by three Italian art experts, is possible the work of the greatest of all Italian artists, Michelangelo. The experts say they are ninety percent sure -- however it will still be checked by a panel of international art experts.

SYNOPSIS: If this carving does, in fact, turn out to be the work of the great Italian master, it will be one of the most remarkable art finds ever. A speculative price has already valued the carving at two and a half million dollars (U.S.). And an unusual fact about it, is that Michelangelo is not known to have worked with wood.

Signor giacomo Ugolini, the chief administrator of the Greek catholic church, told a news conference in Beirut that the carving was found in a drawer in a monastery n Lebanon. Signor Ugolini said that when he wanted to have it evaluated he took it to Rome in his hand luggage, because he didn't think it was of any particular value. He told reporters he was "amazed to learn it was by Michelangelo, we think it may be worth two and a half million dollars". The carving appeared to be from the Renaissance period, however one characteristic in particular pointed to it being the work of the ??? -- it was carved in one piece, rather than having its arms carved separately. Signor Ugolini gave no indication what will happen to the piece of art, other than it will be inspected by a team of international art experts.
