Background: A ceremony took place at the southern Portuguese airbase of Beja on November 25 to commemorate the crushing of a left-wing military revolt exactly eight years previously (November 25, 1975). President Antonio Ramalho Eases, who as an army officer led loyal troops who put down the rising, attended the ceremony at the airbase. It was his action then that led to his choice as President of the Portuguese Republic in 1976. The Chief of Armed Forces, General Melo Egidio, pledged the military's dependence on the nation's civilian government and referred to the armed forces as "a disciplined, united, non-party corps with a high ethical sentiment in the carrying out of their duty". Prior to the left-wing military revolt in 1975 the armed forces restored democracy to the country in the April 1974 revolution.
