  • Description

The Saudi Arabian and West German Governments opened talks in Bonn on Tuesday (5 August) on economic cooperation between the two countries.

Heading the West German side was Doctor Detley Rohwedder, the Economics Ministry State Secretary, and leading the Saudi Arabian delegation was Mr. Yamil al-Heyailan, their Ambassador to Bonn.

With economic cooperation the main topic the two sides met through their joint commission. The Commission was set up after a visit to Saudi Arabia by the West German Economics Minister, Doctor Hans Friderichs.

Also taking part in the talks was Mr. Abduchadi Taher, the governor of Petromin, the state owned Saudi oil concern, members of the Saudi planning staff, and industrialists from both countries.

This meeting of the Commission has taken on a special importance since the Saudi decision last May to draw up a 677 million pound (sterling) five year development plan.

About 60 per cent of the plan is earmarked for economic and social development projects -- and is ten times the size of the plan it replaces. Also high on the agenda, is the Saudi Government's decision for increased cooperation between West German and Saudi companies in joint ventures.

Last year West German exports to Saudi Arabia leapt by 120 per cent to 135 million pounds (sterling) -- including vehicles, machine tools and electrical goods.

In turn, Saudi Arabia was West Germany's most important crude oil supplier, making up almost all the goods, West Germany's imported from Saudi Arabia.
